INDONESIA PAINTING
Biantoro Santoso & Meli Angkapradipta

It has been a while since Nadi Gallery held thematic exhibitions, based on certain themes or approaches. As can be seen from the title, the group exhibition we are currently presenting emphasizes paintings.

From our simple discussions with our colleagues like Agus Suwage, Handiwirman Saputra, and R.E. Hartanto, whose passion for painting is unquenchable, we finally found ourselves affirming that apart from genuine ideas, the role of skilled hands and unrelenting craftsmanship of the artists is nowhere to be taken lightly. After hours of exchanging ideas and sharing our thoughts, we also kept in mind that convening painters in Indonesia would have been a colossal, if not impossible, undertaking; however, having a series of biannual, if not triannual, exhibitions showcasing works embedding ideas and passionate endeavour would still well be within our reach. For our first Indonesia Painting series, we name it “Indonesia Painting I: Vita Activa”, and we hope that the subsequent themes be regularly presented by Nadi Gallery.

We would like to thank R. E. Hartanto (research assistant curator) whose passion and enthusiasm have made this possible, and to introduce you to Mardohar Batu Bornok Simanjuntak – the curator of this exhibition. We would like to express our gratitude to all the artists involved: Agung Mangu Putra, Agus Suwage, Budi Kustarto, Carla Agustian, Chusin Setiadikara, Dadang Rukmana, Dewa Ngakan Made Ardana, Handiwirman Saputra, Iwan Yusuf, J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra, Kokok P. Sancoko, Linna Oei, Mariam Sofrina, Muhammad Reggie Aquara, R.E. Hartanto, Rizka Azizah Hayati, Ronald Manullang, Sekar Jatiningrum, Sigit Santoso, Wedhar Riyadi, and Yogie Ahmad Ginanjar.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Budi Setiadharma for officiating Indonesia Painting exhibition, and to Mr. Tom Tandio and Ms. Widya Triyana for hosting the event. We would like to thank artists, curators, the media, collectors, art dealers, and everyone who has supported Nadi Gallery, whose immense support has always ensured our longstanding 23-year contribution to the Indonesian art world. We do certainly hope that the cooperation and participation that have always been the backbone and spirit of Nadi Gallery will drive us all further toward the progressive future of Indonesian fine arts.
